THIS WEEK'S ''PRAYER REQUEST UPDATE'':
(18-March-2011 Issue)
a patient in Alabama is diagnosed as having a ''VRE'' infection.
Let's review quickly what led up to Mrs. Collins' present health condition:
• On December 1st, 2011, Mrs. Collins was hospitalized in Birmingham, Alabama, at the St. Vincent Hospital because of three broken bones in the pelvic area.
• While being kept bedridden so that the bones could heal, Mrs. Collins lost the ability to ambulate (walk). An opportunity for Mrs. Collins to be guided through physical therapy and walking rehabilitation exists in the hometown of Mr. & Mrs. Collins in Alabaster, Alabama, at the Chandler facility.
• Mrs. Collins was frequently refused when she would ask to be taken to the bathroom. Instead she was told to go in the hospital diaper she was wearing -- and then she would be left to sit or lay for hours before the staff would change her. This happened at both St. Vincent's and now in State confinement at the Cooper Green Mercy Hospital. This has resulted in an infection (UTI).
• The urinary tract infection has progressed into a condition that the medical world of today calls ''VRE'' -- which stands for Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci. Vancomycin is a drug (technically it's a glycopeptide antibiotic). The bacteria Enterococci is described in one medical book as ''a group of gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that commonly live in the gut.''
NOTE the blessing that this infection which God can cure may provide for Mrs. Collins IF we are praying for her and God is moved by our prayers for our sister in the faith, a minister's wife, to heal her infection and grant her a special private room at Chandler while she regains her strength and ability to walk.
Here's a little more about what is a VRE infection:
According to Krames Online Patient Education (Northern Inyo Hospital):
http://nih.kramesonline.com/HealthSheets/3,S,40043
''VRE infection is caused by germs that live in the intestines and on the skin. These germs are called *Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE).* This is because they resist certain antibiotics (germ-fighting medications), especially Vancomycin. Normally VRE do not cause problems. But sometimes they spread and cause infection. VRE can cause infection anywhere in the body.'' (Emphasis added.)
NOTE: Mrs. Collins never has never been diagnosed with this present ''VRE'' infection before being placed by the State in the Cooper Green Hospital where she contracted it -- probably picked it up there.
AGAIN THE POTENTIAL BLESSING in this is that Mrs. Collins is required to have a private room and private bath in the rehab facility in their hometown because of the VRE determination. Specific prayer that (1) God will heal the infection and (2) that a private room will become available in a timely way and (3) that God will strengthen Mrs. Collins to be able to go through physical therapy and (4) come out of it all with a forgiving attitude toward those who neglected her during her times of need in the past several months and (5) that God will help us all to understand and know what we should about trusting Him rather than men and the medical world.
You can send cards of encouragement to Mr. or Mrs. Collins directly to their home address as follows:

UPDATE:
As of the Court hearing on 15-March-2011, here's what has happened (and what needs yet to happen).
Background: A State agency (the Shelby County Department of Human Resources -- SCDHR) of Alabama had filed a petition with State court requesting four things to be ordered over Sara Collins:
1) A Conservator;
2) A Guardian;
3) A Guardian-Ad-Litem;
4) A Placement Order.
Several weeks ago Mrs. Collins' husband, minister Robert Collins, filed a formal Opposition with the court. In response to the Opposition, the State agency, SCDHR, filed a Request for Dismissal of items one and two of their petition. The agency filed the Request for Dismissal on 14-March-2011 just one day before the 15-March hearing.
That effectively leaves in their Petition to the Court, only items 3 and 4 -- item 3 being a request for a Guardian-Ad-Litem (''GAL'') which the agency tells Mr. Collins will not be billed against the Collins' estate (will not cost him anything) and item 4 being a request for a Placement Order (to confine Mrs. Collins to a medical facility appointed or approved by the State agency with the State court's approval). The State agency has agreed with Mr. Collins' suggestion that Mrs. Collins be placed in a rehabilitation and health facility near his home in Alabaster.
At the 15-March-2011 hearing, the judge postponed ruling on the Petition for a short time (future date not yet determined) to see if the State hospital does follow through and send Mrs. Collins on to the facility known as ''Chandler'' in Alabaster after her infection heals. Mr. Collins believes that God intervened with much favor yesterday and appreciates on prayers on behalf of his wife and himself in this. His wife still needs 1) healing of the infection and 2) the move to the Chandler rehabilitation facility in Alabaster.
